Inlays and Onlaysin Lakeway, TX

Refresh Your Beautiful Smile

Teeth can become worn out over time, whether it’s from dental trauma, age, or oral health issues including cavities. This damage to your teeth’s biting surfaces can lead to difficulty chewing and speaking with comfort.

Fortunately, you can receive custom-made inlays and onlays from Lakeway Dental Associates. Dr. Dupper is dedicated to providing expert dental care to every patient and will take the time to help determine if inlays and onlays are the best treatment for you. Read on to learn more about how you can benefit from these restorations.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are custom-made fillings reserved for tooth damage that’s too severe for regular fillings, but not severe enough for dental crowns. An inlay is applied inside the cusps of the tooth, while an onlay extends over the cusps of the tooth for a more substantial restoration.

While more traditional treatment methods used metal materials for inlays and onlays in the past, Dr. Dupper and our expert staff are proud to offer a metal-free composite to match the natural color of your teeth for a seamless appearance.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are unique types of dental restorations that offer various benefits for patients. Some advantages of this treatment include:

  • Preserves your natural tooth structure
  • Durability and longevity
  • Stain-resistance
  • Easy maintenance
  • Maintain their shape over time

When Are Inlays and Onlays Necessary?

Dr. Dupper may recommend an inlay or onlay to patients when more than half of their tooth’s biting surface has been damaged. He may also recommend these restorations to patients with:

  • Missing filings
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Broken or fractured teeth

Inlays and onlays are reserved for specific instances of tooth damage. At your initial consultation, Dr. Dupper will determine if one of these restorations is right for you. He’ll also discuss your other treatment options, if necessary. We encourage you to schedule a consultation at our Lakeway office to learn which treatment will most benefit you.

The Inlay and Onlay Process

Depending on your personalized treatment plan, you may be able to receive your restorations in as few as two appointments at our Lakeway office. After your initial consultation with Dr. Dupper, you can begin the procedure the same day.

First Appointment

Dr. Dupper will begin the procedure by administering a local anesthetic so you don’t feel any pain while he works on your tooth. Once the numbness sets in, he’ll remove any damaged or decayed tissues from the targeted area to make room for your restoration.

Finally, Dr. Dupper will take a detailed impression of your teeth to be sent to a dental lab to make your inlay or onlay. Dr. Dupper will then apply a temporary sealant over your teeth to protect them from bacteria in the meantime. He’ll also provide you with a list of instructions on how to care for your treated tooth.

Second Appointment

When we receive your restorations from the lab, you’ll return to our Lakeway office for your final fitting. Dr. Dupper will first remove the temporary sealant and meticulously clean your teeth.

After placing your inlay or onlay, he’ll make any necessary adjustments to ensure it fits naturally with the rest of your smile. Once the restoration is bonded to your teeth with a strong resin, you’re free to leave our office with a restored and functional smile!
